Dear Tobi and Ulli,

It has been a long time (2 years I think!) since we have been in contact.  It has gone so quickly.  I should before now have let you know how things have been going with the children you helped with.  Usually I would have caught up with you around Christmas/January last year but I have had a very bad year, including the death of a youth who stayed with us during Covid (Jesse) at Christmas last year and I have also lost both of my parents in that time.  It has all been a struggle.  I hope you are doing ok?

E-MAIL VON THERESA 2024

Dear Tobi and Ulli,

It has been a long time (2 years I think!) since we have been in contact. It has gone so quickly. I should before now have let you know how things have been going with the children you helped with. Usually I would have caught up with you around Christmas/January last year but I have had a very bad year, including the death of a youth who stayed with us during Covid (Jesse) at Christmas last year and I have also lost both of my parents in that time. It has all been a struggle. I hope you are doing ok?

I still have all the same kids under my care (even the ones who are now adult have needed help with college or when trying to find work) plus of course I have gained a few others.

I have six children under 18 still living here with me full time but am still supporting several in college etc who are here during the holidays.

Rehan (11) who has been here since he was a few days old. Rehan is in primary school and consistently in the top 3 in class. He has just won a place in the National Chess Championships for schools in Nairobi.

Alam (10) who has been with me since she was a baby. She is in the same class as Rehan and also always in the top 3. She is on the swimming team.

Alimlim (14) who has been here for 10 years. Alimlim is very bright and usually top of the class. She is in middle school (Lower Secondary).

Akai (15) who has been here for 10 years. Akai joined high school in January. She is a quiet but intelligent girl but very shy and reserved but she remembers a lot of childhood trauma.

The above three girls are sisters. They are from Kipsongo slum and were found on the Kitale rubbish dump scavenging for food 10 years ago. The older girls had never been to school or learnt English and the baby was very sick and behind in development. We tried to reintegrate them with their mother but we discovered that she was very sick and she died in hospital. We could never find any relatives willing to take the girls and we took them in to keep them together.

Haron (16) who has been here for 6 years. He is in the same class as Alimlim at Lower Secondary School and is also doing well in class. He missed two full years of school before and during his heart surgery and spent over six months in hospital. Haron has rheumatic heart disease and had major open heart surgery to repair and replace damaged heart valves. The surgery cost over 2 million shillings. He is on medication and will need another smaller surgery in the next couple of years to repair a valve that is badly scarred.

David (15) who has been here for 4 years. David also joined high school this January. David is a total orphan who was living with his grandmother in Turkana but dying of cancer when he was found. During Covid lockdown, David came to stay with us to have chemotherapy treatment. The treatment was successful and he has made a full recovery. He loves football. He has visited his grandmother a few times but she has made it very clear that she is not willing to care for him.

Morgan (17) who has been here for 5 years. Morgan has finished school and is now in college learning computer programming.

Then I have three over 18:

Shadrack (24) who finished university in December 2023. He is currently looking for work or internships based on his degree (Biochemistry and Molecular Engineering). This might take some time and he may have to pursue a Masters Degree to improve his chances.

Philip (26) who never managed to find work after he finished his Taxation course with the Kenya Revenue Authority. He has done various casual jobs in Nairobi but often needs help.

Kelvin (20) who is in university in Nairobi studying to be a Certified Accountant. He has been with me since he was seven years old.

Alex (25) who has severe physical handicaps and deformity caused by neurofibromatosis and scoliosis. He needs a wheelchair or crutches and also is partially blind and deaf with a speech disability. His condition affected his learning and he failed his primary school exams. I have just set him up with a small bookstore in a village where a friend of mine lives to see if he can live independently. We visit weekly and are still supporting him until we see if he can manage the business.

Then there are a few kids who have stayed with me but we got them back into families but support them with schooling and they include:

Adam (age 10) who lived with us for the first five months of his life until we could reintegrate him with his grandparents (his mother was a schoolgirl). I pay his school fees and any other major expenses.

David Limo (age 17) whose father died a year ago forcing David to drop out of high school in Form 3 as there was no money to pay fees. David is now repeating form 3 in the same school as Akai and my David. We are trying to ensure his education is paid for.

Faith (16), Mercy (14) and Samuel (8). This is a very sad case one of my staff came across in Namanjala. The children’s mother is mentally disabled, as is their grandmother who they all live with. There is no sign of any father. A well-wisher in the community had enrolled Samuel (who also has mental challenges (possibly autistic) and is non-verbal) in a small local school run by the Catholic Church. He is not really learning but he is in a safe environment. He had also helped with school fees for the two girls (who seem to be ok mentally). Unfortunately, this sponsor has been very ill and can no longer work and pay these fees. The school were understanding and allowed us to pay half the fees for term 1 and to give us time to find the money in order the keep the girls in school. They are in form 1 and form 2 high school. We also need fees to keep little Samuel in school and also for him to attend a therapist weekly who is trying to help him speak.

And I am also helping several other children with disabilities with access to medical care and surgeries wherever that can help them. They are all from very poor backgrounds and in some cases I am helping with school costs. I have usually been able to find free or subsidised surgeries for these children but I still have to pay for transport, accommodation, medicines, crutches or wheelchairs as well as medical consultations and tests, x-rays, scans etc.

I have been very grateful for all of your past help towards education for the various children and I am hoping that you and your friends may be able to help again as I am finding the increased cost of living here a real struggle and the younger ones still have a lot of years to go! It also seems that the older ones take a long time to find jobs even after education.

Regards to you and your family and I do hope all is well with you. Please let me know if you need any information at all on any of these cases or costs. I have attached some photos.

Best wishes from Kenya

Theresa, Ibrahim and family
